Message from the Director

On October 1, 2020, the Nantou Management Office of the Irrigation Agency, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, was officially established, succeeding the former Nantou Irrigation Association. On August 1, 2023, with the creation of the Ministry of Agriculture, our office was renamed the Nantou Management Office, Irrigation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture.

Our office’s jurisdiction is located in central Taiwan, bordered by the Central Mountain Range to the east and the Maoluo River, a tributary of the Wu River, to the southwest, marking the boundary with the Changhua Management Office of the Irrigation Agency. To the north, the Caohu River forms the border with the Taichung Management Office. Our jurisdiction covers 11 townships, including Yuchi Township, Renai Township, Puli Township, Guoxing Township, Caotun Township, Nantou City, and Zhongliao Township in Nantou County; Xinshe District, Wufeng District, and Wuri District in Taichung City; and Fenyuan Township in Changhua County.

Our office oversees a predominantly mountainous region, encompassing 74 irrigation systems and 10 workstations. Surface water is our primary source of irrigation, with 68 systems drawing water from the Wu River and 6 from the Zhuoshui River. The main crop in our jurisdiction is double-cropping rice, followed by sugarcane, bamboo shoots, vegetables, flowers, tobacco, and fruit trees. Overall, our irrigation network covers an area of 13,242 hectares.

In response to climate change and the need for adaptation, as well as in alignment with policies to expand irrigation services, our office focuses on three key areas in addition to routine tasks. We encourage all staff and farming communities to join us in promoting the sustainable development of agricultural water resources.

  1. We aim to provide high-quality, sufficient irrigation water, continuously improve and maintain irrigation and drainage facilities, and enhance water storage capacities. By integrating information and communication technology with automated control systems, and leveraging advisory committees and irrigation group members, we will effectively manage the quality and quantity of irrigation water to ensure stability.

  2. We also support the expansion of irrigation services and related policies, promoting gradual improvements tailored to local conditions to benefit more farmers and farmland. At the same time, we will incorporate facility- and eco-friendly initiatives to help boost agricultural productivity.

  3. To strengthen financial conditions, we are effectively utilizing non-business land and buildings, actively addressing land encroachment issues, and encouraging economic diversification to increase income. We are also implementing reasonable expense controls to enhance sustainable operational capacity and bolster the Nantou Irrigation Business Fund.
